Chinese wooden totem mask was initiated in the Xia dynasty (3000-3200 B.C.).The carven painted wooden masks were the adoring numen of a hamlet originally,also used in the fields of battle to make dreadful figures to frighten the ghost and the enemy. Later on the masks were employed to show the ethical spirit.The colors on the masks conveyed different meanings, such as a red face to represent loyalty, black for bravery and multi-colored for wickedness.These masks were collected from Tibet,Guizhou,Yunnan and Qinghai.Many minority tribes live there.All of these masks are handmade by local handicraftsmen.
